I. OVERVIEW
Rice is one of the most widely consumed cereals in the world, in general, and in Cameroon, in particular. It can produce numerous stems or stalks from the germination of a single grain, and can be grown in all the agro-ecological zones of Cameroon. There are three main farming systems::
- Rain fed upland rice cultivation;
- Rain fed lowland rice cultivation;
- Irrigated rice cultivation;
The production cycle for irrigated rice varies from 3 to 4 months.
Rice by-products include paddy rice, white rice (whole and broken), brown / whole grain rice, rice bran and rice husks.
II. OBJECTIVE:
The aim of this sheet is to boost the productivity and production of irrigated rice by providing an updated compendium of good agricultural practices for producers. At national level, this sheet will help mitigate the effects of food crisis and reduce imports. It is not only a support tool for extension workers and rural advisers involved in capacity-building for producers, but also a reference document for farmers.
III. TECHNICAL ITINERARY
III.1 Site Selection
Choose:
- Homogeneous, unshaded, accessible, slightly sloping land with clay- and silty soils that are less permeable to prevent rapid water infiltration;
- A lowland area with seasonal flooding;
- Avoid a site where rice is the previous crop.
III.2 Soil preparation
- Clear and treat with herbicide if necessary, before ploughing;
- Water the plot to allow weed seeds to germinate and wait 5 to 10 days;
- Plough 15-20 cm deep at least two weeks before transplanting;
- Fertilise the soil deeply with 5 to 10 t/ha of organic fertiliser;
- Build up paddies using bunds;
- Flood the plot to eliminate regrowth from previous crops and weeds;
