# OBJECTIVE OF THE DATA SHEET
The aim of this fact sheet is to increase the productivity and production of dry-season sorghum in order to mitigate the effects of the food crisis by providing producers with an updated collection of good agricultural practices
I. GENERAL INFORMATION
Off-season sorghum grows on vertisols or clay soils throughout the dry season, thanks to the soil moisture released by the large amount of water stored during the rainy season. Muskwari plays an important role in food security. Muskwari sorghum is very rich in iron, calcium and phosphorus. Sorghum is used both for human and animal consumption. It is processed into alcoholic beverages and the stalks are used as firewood.
In the northern part of Cameroon, transplanted sorghum, or flood recession sorghum, is grown from September onwards. “Babouri” and “muskuwaari” are adapted to off-season cultivation in the north.
They require very little water, are drought-resistant, require little fertiliser and play a major role in the preservation of biodiversity.
II. TECHNICAL ITINERARY
II.1. Soil selection
Preference: Vertisols or clay soils.
II.2. Soil preparation
Option 1:
Clear weeds, cut small shrubs and clear the plot for manual weeding between mid-September and the end of October; Repair dykes and karal between mid-August and mid-September;
Option 2: chemical weeding
Use herbicides for chemical weeding.
II.3. Sowing period and method
Quantity and treatment of seeds
It is essential to treat the seeds with an insecticide-fungicide to protect against soil insects, damping-off and birds that peck at the seeds.
