Newsletter on agricultural products price monitoring on markets in the Adamawa, North and Far North regions

This newsletter presents price trends for 30 food products monitored monthly on 30 pilot markets in the Adamawa, North and Far North regions of Cameroon from March to May 2022. Prices of cereals, oils, and vegetables generally increased, while roots and tubers showed seasonal declines. The data was collected by MINADER agents with support from WFP. The bulletin highlights the need for price regulation measures.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Prices of wheat and maize experienced a continuous increase, with higher prices in the Far North region during the months of April and May 2022.
  • As for rice, there are price variations within each region.
  • The price of groundnuts, as well as groundnut and cotton oil, continuously increased during the period of analysis.
  • Tomato prices increased in all three regions monitored since March 2022.
  • An increase of prices in plantain and sweet banana was recorded in the Adamawa and North regions.
  • The price of roots and tubers increased, with the highest price increase observed in the Far North.
  • The price of onion rose in the Adamawa and Far North regions.

Methodology

The data presented in this bulletin was collected by agents of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MINADER), as part of the pilot project on the Market Information System (SIM) implemented by the Director of Agricultural Surveys and Statistics-DESA, with the technical and financial support of the World Food Program (WFP) in Cameroon.

After a training of the data collection agents, a calibration of each product was carried out in order to identify the local units of measurement in the markets.

In total, 30 food products are monitored monthly on 30 pilot markets in the Adamawa, North and Far North regions.

  1. Cereals : broadbased rise in prices

Rice

The price per kilogram of husked local rice experienced ups and downs/showed a « hiccup » pattern /made a bumpy ride in the Far North regions and increasing in the North region for March, April and May. The North region recorded an increase of 21% between March and May. On the other hand, the Far North region experienced a decline of 13% over the same period.

Maize

The Adamawa, Far North and North regions experienced a gradual increase in the price per kilogram of maize, i.e. 3% between March and April and 2% between April and May. The Far North region is the most expensive region compared to the other two regions for the three months (+7% compared to the average of the three regions).
