Martin BELINGA EBOUTOU Minister, Director of Civil Cabinet of the Presidency of the Republic
The date of 14 August 2013 is a milestone in Cameroon - Nigeria relations. In fact, with the restoration of our country's effective and complete sovereignty over the Bakassi peninsula, it marks the end of two decades of an unfortunate border conflict between the two neighbouring countries.
This new-found peace was not a given! We are not talking here of peace which means absence of war, but peace which means absence of war, plus social justice and development. It is a long-lasting and permanent peace between Cameroon and Nigeria.
There is every reason to be happy, for the outbreak of war at our borders in Bakassi was a near certainty. It was about to engulf our countrysides, set our cities ablaze and burn to ashes the future of many generations of both Cameroonians and Nigerians.
Fortunately, there was a man, H.E. Paul BIYA, symbol, for the future of both countries, of the dove and the olive branch, as superb and as magnificent as the flame of peace, a man of ethics and morals, justice and peace. He knew, beyond mere book knowledge, that peace is a morally founded rule of law because it is fullness. He knew that peace is conquered; that it is an immeasurable force; that it should alone govern human relations; that it is the udder from which a country's prosperity flows, the source of all wealth.
The President of the Republic also knew that peace is the "corner stone", the protective wall of the Cameroon edifice, the backbone of his policy. Peace has always choked the seeds of evil by nurturing the flowers of concord and universal harmony. H.E. Paul BIYA was aware that such peace must be founded on the objective bases of justice and equity, which it is not built single-handedly, better still, it is built collectively.
