# An Admired and Highly Respected State
Martin BELINGA EBOUTOU
Minister, Director of the Civil Cabinet of the Presidency of the Republic
The event is recent and memories still fresh. The fiftieth anniversary of Reunification was celebrated with pomp, in Buea, on 20 February 2014. This was a historic moment of exceptional communion between Cameroonians, a perfect symphony of the fundamental values of our Nation: unity, peace and stability. Indeed, Cameroonians are a people profoundly attached to peace and unity. They will again have the opportunity to demonstrate such attachment during the commemoration on 20 may 2014, of the 42nd National Day, to celebrate Unity.
Since his accession to the helm of State, on 6 November 1982, the President of the Republic, H.E. Paul BIYA, has made the values of Unity and Peace the cornerstone of his policy. Cameroonians and the world at large are infinitely grateful to him. The Head of State's determination to preserve and entrench these values allows Cameroon to serenely look forward to becoming an emerging country. This attitude of President BIYA makes Cameroon a committed Nation, an essential actor for peace and security in Africa. Remember the outcome of the Bakassi dispute, recognized as an example in the peaceful settlement of border conflicts in the continent. Remember also the holding, in June 2013, in Yaounde, of the very first Summit organized in Africa on maritime security and safety in the Gulf of Guinea. Lastly, remember the successive releases of hostages.
In a troubled continent where the majority of States are plagued by chronic instability, Cameroon has been able to remain a safe haven, an island of stability, although the serenity of its citizens and foreigners living on its soil is now and then disturbed by events happening in some immediate neighbouring countries. This is why we should strongly condemn the kidnapping religious personalities in the northern part of the country, as well as other barbaric acts committed on our territory, and, particularly, assure each and every one of the determination of the Head of State, as before, to release any hostages.
