July 2018: a month replete with major political and diplomatic events in Cameroon.
On July 9, the Head of State signs the decree that was most feared by some, for reasons best known to them, but most expected by the majority of our fellow citizens, that which convenes Cameroonians to the polls on October 7, 2018 to elect the President of the Republic. This is an indication of the strict respect of the law, coupled with the unalloyed will of President Paul BIYA to always seek the trust of the people in order to pursue the immense work of nation-building.
On July 11, the President of the Republic promulgates into law the extension of the terms of office of Members of Parliament adopted a few days earlier by Parliament and signs another decree extending the terms of office of Municipal Councillors. Elected in 2013, Members of Parliament and Municipal Councillors, by this law, obtain a mandate of one more year to allow for the holding of the 7 October poll in a conducive atmosphere.
The presidential election will therefore take place on that date. Those who aspire to preside over the destiny of our nation had the opportunity to submit their candidacy. ELECAM, the independent body responsible for the electoral process, has done its job and published the list of candidates seeking the supreme office.
