END OF YEAR ADDRESS BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE CAMEROON BAR
Distinguished Members of the Bar Council, Past Presidents of the Bar, Learned Colleagues,
As the year 2025 draws to a close, I address you with a deep sense of responsibility and collective reflection. Once again, we are called to take stock of our journey as a professional body, to acknowledge our progress, to confront our challenges with honesty, and to outline the direction in which we must move together.
Before all else, I invite us to pause in solemn remembrance of our colleagues who passed away during the course of the year. We remember specially the past President of the General Assembly, Barrister ASONGWE Peter and Past Bar President YONDO Black, amongst our numerous fallen colleagues. Their departure has left voids in our professional family and in the lives of those they served. On behalf of the Cameroon Bar, I extend heartfelt condolences to their families, their chambers, and loved ones. May their souls rest in peace, and may their professional legacy continue to inspire us.
The year 2025 was marked by sustained institutional activity and increased visibility of the Cameroon Bar at both national and international levels. The Bar actively participated in several professional engagements and strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening our standing and advancing the interests of lawyers.
One of the notable achievements of the year was the enhanced international representation of the Cameroon Bar. Many of our colleagues were appointed to leadership roles and actively involved in respected international legal institutions, including the International Association of Lawyers, the African Bar Association, the International Conference of Bar Associations, and the Pan
African Lawyers Union. These appointments are not symbolic. They reflect recognition of the competence of Cameroonian lawyers, and they provide platforms through which the voice of our Bar is heard on issues affecting the legal profession globally.
In the same spirit, the Bar recorded significant progress in improving its international relations. High-level engagements were held with the heads of several diplomatic missions, specifically the embassies of France and the United States of America, and the High Commissions of Britain and Canada. These interactions were complemented by official visits abroad, France, in particular, culminating in the signing of partnership agreements with the Paris Bar and the Bordeaux Bar. These partnerships have opened up avenues for training, professional exchange, and comparative learning, particularly beneficial to young lawyers.
