The Minister of Forestry and Wildlife, Chairman of the National "Man and the Biosphere" Committee, hereby informs the public that the International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB-ICC) has approved the nomination of the Takamanda Cross River Gorilla Biosphere Reserve, established around Takamanda National Park in the South-West Region, following the deliberations of its 38th session held from 3 to 6 June 2026 in Hernandarias, Paraguay.
The integration of the Takamanda Cross River Gorilla Biosphere Reserve into the World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR) increases to six (6) the number of Biosphere Reserves in Cameroon, considering the other sites already included in this network, notably Korup Tropical Forest (2023), Doumba-Rey (2022), Benoue (1981), Dja (1981) and Waza (1979).
Biosphere reserves play an important role in UNESCO's environmental mission. Alongside the World Heritage natural sites, they contribute in their own way to the protection of terrestrial and marine ecosystems. In doing so, they support the achievement of the global target adopted at the Kunming-Montreal Summit to conserve 30% of the world's land and seas by 2030.
This new "Biosphere Reserve" designated by UNESCO, which indeed opens several practical opportunities for sustainable development, attests to Cameroon's strong commitment to research and awareness-raising aimed at developing innovative practices for the sustainable management of Protected Areas, with people placed at the centre of concerns.
Under the Very Strict Guidance of the President of the Republic, Head of State, the Government remains determined to pursue necessary efforts to reconcile conservation objectives with socio-economic development goals, particularly to the benefit of communities living in and around Protected Areas.

Le Ministre des Forêts et de la Faune, Président du Comité National « Man and Biosphere » informe le public que, le Conseil International de Coordination du Programme sur l'Homme et la Biosphère (CIC-MAB) a approuvé la candidature de la Réserve de Biosphère de Gorille de Cross-River de Takamanda, construite autour du Parc National de Takamanda dans la Région du Sud-Ouest, à la faveur des délibérations issues de sa 38ème session tenue du 03 au 06 juin 2026 à Hernandaria au Paraguay.
