Recevant les sportifs du Cameroun au Palais de l'Unité, le 14 décembre 1982, quelques semaines seulement après son accession à la magistrature suprême, le Président Paul BIYA tint ces propos :
« Au Cameroun, il n'y a pas de sports majeurs, de sports mineurs, ou de sports réservés. Exigeant de tous de l'effort et de la persévérance, ils contribuent (...) à l'accomplissement individuel et collectif, au renforcement de l'unité nationale, à la projection de la personnalité camerounaise à l'extérieur, enfin à notre volonté de paix et de fraternité entre les peuples. »
