# 2013: A Beautiful Year
Martin BELINGA EBOUTOU
Minister, Director of Civil Cabinet of the Presidency of the Republic
For humanity, the year 2013 ended on a sad note with the death of Nelson MANDELA on December 5. In his condolences to his South African counterpart, made with the dignity that characterizes him and empathy that is his trademark, President Paul BIYA used heavily loaded words: "I bow respectfully before the memory of one who, in his lifetime, had entered into legend. MADIBA was in his rich and unique life, an activist of just and noble causes, a visionary statesman, a Wiseman admired and honored worldwide. He bequeathed to posterity a precious heritage". These carefully chosen words, short and dense, describe what Nelson MANDELA was, a man at the service of his people, a being with an exceptional courage and bounty, whom alone incarnates, the cardinal values of freedom, justice and progress, arterial veins without which humanity cannot exist.
For Cameroon, 2013 has been a year sheathed with victory and glory. Our country has transcended space and time, as it beamed at the national and international levels. The official visits of the President of the Republic to France, Turkey and the Vatican were replete with success. Each of them has contributed to strengthen cooperation with the countries visited and confirmed Cameroon as an indispensable nation in the management of conflicts and the preservation of peace in Africa. And it is with pleasure sparkling with pride that we remember the organization and holding in Yaoundé on 24 and 25 June, of the summit, unprecedented in history, on Maritime Safety and Security in the Gulf of Guinea. Cameroonians were also pleased to see President Paul BIYA, crowned with his long and rich experience in the management of public affairs, make a significant contribution to the Elysée Summit on Peace and Security in Africa, on 6 and 7 December in Paris. His acclaimed art of quiet diplomacy in the management and successful outcome of hostage taking that took place on our territory was equally admired. It will be almost an exhilarating redundancy to express the rapture of Cameroonians, when on August 13, our country regained full and entire sovereignty over the Bakassi Peninsula.
