COMMUNIQUÉ
ON THE RESURGENCE OF CERTAIN CRIMES IN CAMEROON
The Cameroon Bar Association has observed, through media and social networks, a disturbing resurgence of sexual offenses manifested by violent assaults on the physical integrity of children, sometimes of a very young age.
Specifically, the Cameroon Bar Association has been informed of the case of a certain individual, Materne Rameaux ABOMO NGONO, who, allegedly taking advantage of his position as a teacher, is reported to have abused approximately fifteen children between the ages of four (4) and fourteen (14) in the city of Yaoundé, specifically in the Meyo neighbourhood of Yaoundé IV Subdivision.
At the same time, the Cameroon Bar Association has learned with equal consternation of the case of a three-year-old girl child, a pupil at a school in the Odza neighborhood of Yaoundé, who is also reported to have been the victim of rape, an incident that gave rise to public demonstrations around her school on 28 May 2026.
On the same day, we learned that a 14-year-old girl had allegedly been raped by her teacher in the city of Douala, in an area known as PK14, and that another man had been beaten by a mob in Bangangté for also raping a 10-year-old girl whom he had targeted at her school.
On that same day, reports emerged that a fourteen-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her teacher in the city of Douala, in the locality known as PK14.
Separately, in Bangangté, an individual was subjected to mob violence after allegedly raping a ten-year-old girl whom he had targeted from his school.
In the North-West Region, particularly in Momo Division, a case has been reported of a fourteen-year-old girl raped by a seventy-year-old man. Following his arrest, he allegedly paid the sum of 30,000 CFA francs (thirty thousand) to the victim's aunt in an attempt to evade the course of justice.
These events call to mind the deeply distressing case of the child, Divine MBARGA ATANGANA, an eleven-year-old girl who left her home to study at a classmate's residence and was found dead the next day, March 19, 2026, presumably raped and murdered by her classmate's father, who allegedly went so far as to use his own son, also 11 years old, to stand watch.
The alarming observation is that individuals with malicious intent now operate within educational institutions, concealing themselves behind the respected profession of teaching. Thus, the school environment, which was once considered a safe haven for children, is also in the process of being infested by sexual predators.
