COMMUNIQUE
ON THE HUMAN RIGHTS SITUATION IN CAMEROON IN THE POST-ELECTION PERIOD
The Cameroon Bar Association, notes with deep and preoccupying concern the deteriorating security situation on the national political scene, and expresses its indignation at the flagrant human rights violations currently taking place across Cameroon in the aftermath of the October 12th, 2025 presidential elections.
The Bar strongly condemns the acts of destruction, notably the burning of the Court of First Instance in Dschang, an incident whose consequences are irreparable, particularly the loss of judicial archives essentially administration of justice, custody of personal status and criminal report information.
The Bar further condemns the ongoing arrests carried out in violation of established legal procedures bearing a targeted undertone, and reiterates that the right to protest for a right is a universal and inalienable right. No individual can be deprived of the right to peacefully express dissent against injustice or in defense of their rights.
The Bar is particularly appalled by the following incidents:
- The tragic killing of Ms. Zouhaira, a teacher at Poumpouré Public School in the city of Garoua, North Region, on Tuesday, 21 October 2025, allegedly by a member of the security forces.
- The abduction and subsequent murder of Honourable Abe Michael, Member of Parliament for the RDPC party in the North-West Region, on Wednesday, 22 October 2025, by secessionist kidnappers.
- The arbitrary arrests of Mr. Anicet Ekane, Mr. Djeukam, and several FSNC party militants.
- The arrest of activist Fabrice Guera in Douala, Littoral Region.
- The multiple acts of violence, harassment, and arbitrary arrests perpetrated by security forces against members of the population, including minors working in the informal sector, many of whom were at their workplaces and had no direct connection with the demonstrations.
- The refusal of entry into the city of Garoua of Professor Jean Calvin Abba Oyono, in circumstances that raise serious concerns about the restriction of freedom of movement and political expression.
While condemning all forms of violence and lawlessness, the Bar calls on the Government of Cameroon, all political stakeholders, to take note that the prevailing peace in the country is so fragile and requires nourishment by everyone by exercising maximum restraint and responsibility in addressing the already volatile and deeply concerning situation, by watching what is said and the actions taken out or ordered.
