The 5th and 6th of August 2014 were two memorable days for the United States of America and Africa. At the invitation of President Barack OBAMA, almost all African leaders met in Washington D.C. The land of Uncle Sam was abuzz with their remarkable presence.
Naturally, His Excellency Paul BIYA, accompanied by the First Lady, Chantal BIYA, attended the meeting during which critical issues were discussed. He was there, graced with the support of his people. He was there, his legendary politeness and trademark humanism right on his face. He seems to have been chosen by fate to extol Africa's beauty.
The Heads of State and other dignitaries listened to their host with rapt attention. Some were amazed, when they heard him proclaim that "a new Africa is emerging," an Africa that "will help shape the world as it has never done before." Such is the position upheld at the "Africa 21" International Conference convened by President Paul BIYA in Yaounde on 18 and 19 May 2010, as part of celebrations marking the fiftieth anniversary of Cameroon's independence. Yet, others had a vague impression of hearing the same old story when President OBAMA said "Our work as a state must be rooted in empathy and compassion towards one another as brothers and sisters." It sounded, mutatis mutandis, like President BIYA in September 2010 before the United Nations General Assembly saying "The African people aspire to greater understanding and sympathy in the true sense of the word." However, what is wrong with repeating such nice words!
And President OBAMA was well inspired to initiate that summit. He knows better than anyone else the importance of the up-and-coming Africa, how important and necessary it is to partner and
ally with her. Africa has become the world's lungs; she is today the world's heartbeat. Her wealth, in terms of both raw materials and human resources will determine the fate of Humanity. It is rumoured, it is known, it is an open secret!
